Before Bryce could answer, Natalie said, “I’m a distant relative. My name’s Natalie. How do you do?” She felt that it was better not to refer to their secret marriage.
Bryce frowned and glanced at Natalie unhappily, but when he saw the determination in her eyes, he didn’t contradict her. Hearing Natalie’s reply, Vivian heaved a sigh of relief. She’d been worried that there was a closer relationship between Bryce and Natalie.
Vivian said, “May I join you?”
“Sure,” said Natalie casually. “Feel free to sit down.”
Vivian sat beside Bryce. Liam felt something about Vivian he didn’t like. When he saw that she was about to sit down next to Bryce, he felt this feeling even more strongly. He was about to protest, but suddenly a piece of fried chicken was pushed into his mouth.
“Wup!” Liam looked up, startled. Natalie glared at him, her fingers still holding the chicken. She said sternly, “Eat your food. Children are to be seen and not heard when adults are speaking.” Seeing that his mom was unhappy, Liam decided not to say anything more. He just lowered his head and continued to eat.
Vivian hadn’t noticed their little exchange. Her eyes had never left Bryce. He felt a little uncomfortable when he saw her intense expression. He tried to change the subject by asking, “When are you planning to return abroad?”
Vivian had been living overseas for many years, and she only came back to visit her parents and Bryce’s family periodically before departing again. Bryce expected her to follow the same pattern this time.
Vivian said animatedly, “Ah, not so fast, Bryce. You can’t get rid of me so easily. I’m not planning on leaving again anytime soon. On the contrary, I’m going to take over my family’s company, and I’ll need your help when the time comes.”
Bryce nodded in agreement, but he seemed pretty indifferent about the matter of Vivian coming back. “All right,” he said. “No problem.”
Vivian looked crestfallen. She hadn’t expected Bryce to be so uninterested in her semi-permanent return. She remained silent for a while, thinking over what to say next. Eventually, she stirred and said to Natalie, “So, Natalie, how exactly are you related to the Clares, and why haven’t I seen you before? Bryce and I grew up together. I thought I was familiar with all his relatives.”
Natalie felt suddenly depressed, realizing now that there was a deep, long-term connection between Bryce and Vivian. But she smiled and said, “I’m a very distant cousin, so I’m not surprised you haven’t seen me before.” She smiled sweetly.
“Oh,” said Vivian. She turned away from Natalie brusquely and continued chatting casually with Bryce for a while. Eventually, Bryce looked at Natalie and nodded, and she stood up to leave. Liam followed closely behind her, pulling at her sleeve. Because Natalie had told him to keep quiet, he was pouting, feeling wronged.
Vivian decided to take advantage of this opportunity. Before Bryce left, she said, “Bryce, I’m so out of touch with what’s going on. Why don’t we go have a cup of coffee together? You can fill me in on all the gossip.”
To her surprise, Bryce shook his head. Then he turned to look at Liam and said to Vivian, “I’ll go with them.”
Vivian opened her mouth to speak, but then looked at Bryce’s face and changed her mind. He was staring at the little boy intently. In the end, she just muttered, “Very well then.”
Bryce didn’t say anything more. He went and got into the car with Natalie and Liam.
Vivian was a tactful person. She had known Bryce for many years, so she knew that Bryce hated women who pestered him. Consequently, she had always sought to control herself and act appropriately when she was around him. But looking at Bryce leaving with Natalie and Liam, she felt upset. Although she had been overseas for many years, she still knew a lot about Bryce and his doings. She knew that apart from a relationship with a woman many years ago, there had been no one else close to him romantically. She knew all about the women who had tried to get close to him over the years, or so she thought. But now, picturing Bryce, Natalie, and Liam together, she wasn’t so sure, especially given the way the child’s facial features resembled Bryce’s. Vivian felt less and less confident about what was going on, and she had not expected a new relative to appear and be so close to Bryce. Was what Natalie had told her about being a cousin really true?
Watching his car drive away, her composed expression changed as she narrowed her eyes calculatingly. It seemed like she needed to find someone to consult about all of this. Picking up her phone, she dialed a number. When the other person picked up, she said lightly, “Samuel Hammond, it’s me, Vivian Willis. I’m home.”
Vivian said, “Samuel, you really came back. Great.”
Samuel couldn’t conceal his excitement. He seemed to realize that he had lost his composure and quickly shut his mouth.
Vivian said, “Where are you? Come out here and let me treat you to an afternoon cocktail.”
Samuel replied, “All right. Let me know the location, and I’ll come find you straight away.”
They made the arrangements and hung up. Meanwhile, Liam sat in the car. He looked from his father to his mother. He noticed that both of them were silent and felt sad. Natalie had told him not to speak. He was suffering. He held it all in for a while until finally, he felt like he was going to burst if he didn’t speak. He looked up at Bryce with big puzzled eyes and said, “Dad, who was that lady just now? Do you know her?”
Liam hadn’t liked that lady.
Bryce said calmly, “She’s the daughter of a friend of the family. We pretty much grew up together.” Bryce was being quite honest as he explained everything to Liam. When he finished, he looked over at Natalie, curious to know what was going on in her mind.
