“Why would you join the mission if you’re single without kids? We are all married with children. If something happened to us, at least we left behind a legacy.”
He merely smiled at them with a fearless attitude toward death. “I’m fearless exactly because I have nothing worth losing.”
At that time, the two most important women in his life had left him, one after another. As he was already dead inside, he was undaunted by the idea of physical death. In fact, he feared the debilitating loneliness more than death.
He and the forty-nine teammates fought hard for their mission. Only ten survived in the end. He suffered from gunshot and stab wounds on his legs, shoulders, and waist.
Just as he thought he was about to perish in Luminara, a woman in a white coat showed up and gave her best to save his life.
In his memory, she had short hair and wore a thick face mask. Her coat was stained and dirty. She looked like a fallen angel, except for her sparkling eyes, which rivaled the radiance of the sun and moon.
The woman was his savior, Dove, whom he had been searching for years. To his surprise, Dove showed up in his dreams after he met with Allison last night. They were two different people, but he saw Dove in Allison, which was unbelievable.
He rubbed his temples tiredly and was surprised that his headache had disappeared.
At that moment, Mrs. Rosie walked in with a box of pills. She was overjoyed to find Jeremy awake and looking better. “Mr. Jeremy, you’re up! How do you feel today?”
“I’m feeling alright …” He sat up in the bed and was shocked to find himself in pajamas. “How did I get into the pajamas?”
“You came home drenched from head to toe last night. I helped you put on some fresh clothes!” She continued nagging at him while cleaning his room, “You’re almost in your thirties. Why can’t you take better care of yourself? That’s why you need a wife …”
Frowning, he grabbed his hair in irritation. He recalled suffering from a massive headache and searching for his pills in the study. He couldn’t remember anything that happened after that.
“Mrs. Rosie, did you help me change?”
“Who else? Yes, it was me, the old lady.”
He put a hand on his forehead with shame. “I’m nearing thirty. I’m no longer a thirteen-year-old. Can you stop taking off my clothes for me, please?”
“Wow, are you complaining because you think I took advantage of you? I’m at your mom’s age!” She started roasting him, “Did you think I enjoy helping you change? It was exhausting because you were freaking heavy. I’ve seen every nook and cranny of your body as I raised you. There’s nothing to see!”
He was rendered speechless.
“It’s your fault for driving out your wife. You have no one to blame but yourself now that there’s no one to love you! One day, when I’m gone, you’ll revert to a caveman’s lifestyle, I tell you. Nobody’s going to tell you off for roaming around naked. I bet you’ll feel happy then!”
His temper receded in the face of Mrs. Rosie’s endless nagging.
“Move fast. Take off your shirt!”
“What are you doing again?” He flinched and inched backward.
“Applying cream to the wound on your back. You have to apply it consistently for it to work. Quick, take off your shirt now!” Holding Allison’s cream in one hand, Mrs. Rosie urged Jeremy with a stern voice.
He set his sharp gaze on Mrs. Rosie. “How do you know my back’s injured?”
“That’s because …”
Mrs. Rosie quickly corrected herself on the thought of Allison’s request, “I saw it when I helped you change last night! I was shocked to see the huge bruise!”
Thinking back to the heart-stopping moment from last night, he recalled the warmth from Allison’s body as she rested in his arms. He remembered holding onto her tiny waist. A strong and unexplainable desire to protect her arose in him.
Swallowing hard, he felt the urge rising in him, but it didn’t take long before he collected himself.
His expression hardened as he decided that Allison was not worth the sympathy because she had slapped and mocked him, even after he put aside his ego to apologize.
The family butler announced right then, “Mr. Jeremy, Mr. Harper is here to see you. He’s waiting in the living room.”
Jeremy pursed his lips. “Tell him to meet me in the study.”
…
Betty was elated at Landon’s unannounced visit. She hurriedly put on a high couture pink dress that she had recently bought. Next, she retouched her makeup and sprayed a little too much perfume on herself before skipping her way to meet her crush.
When she left her room, she found her sister, Lauren, hugging the annoying teddy bear and hopping around in the corridor. It was as though she was playing hopscotch.
Clicking her tongue with disgust, Betty went up to Lauren and shoved her.
“Ouch!” Lauren stumbled forward and toppled onto the ground, looking clumsy and pitiful. Even so, she clutched onto her teddy bear, which she kept safe in her arms.
“Hahaha! Dear sister, I told you not to fool around in the corridor. Did that hurt?”
Betty was in a great mood. She flipped her hair and walked around Lauren. If she were in a bad mood, she would have stepped on Lauren with her heels.
Lauren slowly got up from the ground after Betty left. She had figured Betty out after these years. As long as she played dumb and avoided stealing Betty’s limelight, she would be safe from Betty’s scoldings and beatings.
“Ms. Lauren!” Mrs. Rosie rushed up to help Lauren. She felt sorry for the young girl. “What happened? How did you trip and fall on a flat ground?”
“I-I’m fine.” She pursed her lips. “I accidentally …”
“I saw Betty passing by. Did she push you?” Mrs. Rosie’s eyes were red with anger.
“No! And I’m fine. I’m leaving.” The mention of Betty’s name scared Lauren. She held her teddy bear and fled with pain in her body.
Mrs. Rosie sighed at the sight of the poor girl scurrying away.
…
After a stroll in the backyard, Landon ran into Betty on his way to the living room.
“Mr. Harper!” Betty put on her widest smile and purred in a saccharine tone. “Why are you here? Are you here to meet Jeremy?”
“Of course,” Landon replied mindlessly.
As a good friend of Jeremy’s, he was aware of the Walsh family’s dynamics. Knowing that Sophia was a difficult bitch, he extended his dislike of the woman to Betty as well and gave her the cold shoulder.
Only Betty was in the dark. She believed it was a matter of time before she captured Landon’s heart because of her good looks, her wealthy family background, and the fact that she made the first move.
She quietly tugged on her collar to lower it. She then held Landon’s muscular arm. With a pout, she talked cutely to him, “Let’s go. I’ll bring you to Jeremy.”
Landon’s eyes darkened with a look of aversion. “Let go of me. The perfume on you is overpowering. And don’t dirty my shirt.”
Betty’s makeup-clad face froze up as she shuddered.
“Are we close? It’s not nice to touch me all over without my permission.” Landon forcefully withdrew his arm from her hold.
“I-I’m sorry. I saw you as my brother because you’re Jeremy’s friend. Nothing more than that …” She worried that he might come to detest her, so she had to explain herself.
“You’re his sister, not mine. Mind your manners next time,” he dropped a frosty remark and left. He wouldn’t want a random stranger to dirty that precious shirt Allison had bought for him.
Betty clenched her fists hard. Suddenly, Landon stopped dead in his tracks, put a hand in his pocket, and squinted at her. She quickly wore a smile as her heart thumped loudly.
“Landon might be tough on the outside, but he is soft on the inside. He must care about me!” she thought excitedly.
“I can’t wrap my head around the recent fashion trends.”
“What?” She was taken aback.
“I didn’t know that people were putting lipstick on their teeth now. I learned something new today.” He snickered and walked away coolly.
It dawned on her that she might have lipstick on her teeth. She rushed to the restroom and bared her teeth in the mirror. She was right.
“Argh!” She screamed in shame and frustration as she felt the urge to shatter the mirror.
…
Landon entered the study and slumped onto the couch with his legs wide open in a careless manner.
“Your sister, Betty, is wild. She was eyeing me and touching me everywhere when I showed up. Rather shameless and cheap, don’t you think? Allison would never do that.”
Jeremy was reading the files that Xavier delivered. He cast an indifferent look at his friend. “Why are you here?”
“To visit you. I was wondering if you had caught the flu.” Landon narrowed his eyes and placed a cigarette between his lips.
“Look at that smug look on your face.” Jeremy’s face clouded as he tightened his grip on the pen.
“I guess I’m doing okay. Better than those who can’t even step foot into Allison’s place.” Landon leisurely puffed a ring of smoke.
