Choking on Landon’s words, Jeremy looked crossed. Landon was right, though. As Allison’s husband of three years, Jeremy was slapped in the face while standing in the rain last night. Indeed, his fate differed from Landon’s.
The more he thought about it, the more incensed he felt.
Landon stubbed his cigarette in the ashtray and sighed before he rose from the couch. He went up to Jeremy and placed his hands on the table. Squinting, he stared into Jeremy’s eyes. Jeremy met his heavy gaze.
“Jeremy, I have to win her over. I want her to be my woman.”
Landon’s eyes were as bright as the shimmer of a blade. His gaze was piercing, as though he wanted to dissect Jeremy and find out why he was attractive to Allison.
Jeremy had treated Allison badly. She spent three years of her marriage alone. Not only that, he forced her to agree to a divorce. Jeremy might be a good friend, but he was a horrible husband, and that upsetted Landon.
Jeremy felt his chest tighten as his knuckles paled. “Did you forget that she’s now with Jonah Taylor?”
“Still better than with you.”
Rage churned inside of Jeremy. His breathing became labored.
“Jonah and Allison are both single. What’s wrong with them dating each other?”
Landon inched closer to Jeremy with a lifted brow. “Let’s talk about you. Your grandpa’s birthday is around the corner, and you’ll soon marry Liana. Why did you stand in the rain in front of Allison’s place at night? Did you think you were Romeo?”
Feeling bitter, Jeremy scoffed. “Quit it. I had my reason.”
“Bro, I don’t care. You shouldn’t harass Allison now that you’re engaged,” Landon fired back fearlessly.
“I will never do that again.” Jeremy took a deep breath with a hostile expression. “However, I’d advise you not to give her trouble if you truly love her. The Taylor family likes her and looks forward to welcoming her as their daughter-in-law. You’ll be an obstacle in her path of marrying into the Taylor family.”
“Fuck you! Us Harpers are as good as the Taylors!” Shaking with fury, Landon blurted out, “I am sure she’ll never marry Jonah Taylor!”
“What did you say?” Jeremy picked up the undertone in Landon’s claim and leaned forward urgently. “What makes you say so?”
“I have my reason. Their relationship is not as it seems. I don’t think she loves Jonah. I bet she was only with Jonah to spite you. I’d do the same if I were her. I’d show off my suitors after the divorce. That will teach you little son-of-a-bitch a lesson!”
Landon blushed when he added. “And she has more than one sultonl
Last night he could think of nothing else but Allison’s remark on his way home.
She had confessed to him I wouldn’t team to love without Jeremy. I will not fall for another man alter leaving him.”
Why not Why couldn’t she?
Of course he wou never let Jeremy know. Why would he give Jeremy something to gloat over?
At the same bone, Jeremy was struck by a belated realization. Pain twisted his heart.
“Is this what it is, Allison? You alving up on your happiness just to get even with me?’ he wondered.
Business was good at the KS World Hotel with a 40% increase in occupancy rate and a full house at the restaurant every day.
The hotel employees worked hard in high spirits, encouraged by Betty Walsh’s apology. They felt that their efforts were seen and knew Alyssa would speak up for them it they were bullied. The results were good because the morale was high.
Alyssa happily checked the monthly financial report in her office. She’d be one step closer to becoming president by doing a good job with the hotel.
Abssa was an ambitious woman who had been cooped up in her boring housewife life for too long. Now that she was back in her career, she was ready to take off.
“Ms. Abyssa, Mr. Jonah is here. Smiling, Sean invited Jonah into the office.
“Jonah She flew toward Jonah like a butterfly and hugged him.
“How are you? Is it tiring?” He gently rested his hand on her waist.
“No! How could I possibly handle the role of president it I were to complain about my workload now?”
After that she covered her mouth and blinked at him. “Um, I’m not trying to kick you out. If you want to be the president, I’m happy to be your vice president! I pledge my loyalty to you!”
“The only thing I worried about is that you’ll give up on it.” He playfully pinched her nose. “I’m scared you’d head off to travel the world again. If that happens, I’ll have to postpone my retirement.”
“I won’t.” She pursed her lips in guilt. “I admit I was selfish. I ignored your feelings while living the high life.”
She promised. “But I’ll never do that again. As a daughter of the Taylor family, I need to take responsibility for running the family business.
I can’t do as I wish.”
She had a taste of the consequences of her willulness, and she wouldn’t want to be put through the pain anymore.
Soon, her phone rang. “Give me a second. I’ll take this call”
She let go of his hand and picked up the phone from the table. Surprised to see Mrs. Rosie’s name on the screen, she hesitated before picking up. “Mrs. Rosie, how are you?”
“Madam Allison,” Mrs. Rosie longingly called out to her.
“Please, just Allison. I’m divorced now,” Alyssa gently corrected her.
“Ah, it’s a habit I can’t change. Sorry, Ms. Burton.”
“It’s fine. What’s wrong, Mrs. Rosie?”
“I used the silver needles on Mr. Jeremy. The headache went away like a miracle, I applied the cream on him, and the bruise cleared up a little as well.”
“Is that so? That’s good to hear.” Reluctant to discuss Jeremy, Alyssa excused herself, “Mrs. Rosie, I am in the middle of something. I’ll call
“Madam Allison? Ats. Rosie called her name in panic. A. Are you never getting back with Mr. Jeremy?”
“Uh¨Chuh
“It’s been a mess at home ever since you left. No one else is looking after Mr. Jeremy except me. He doesn’t listen when I remind him to take care of his health.
“It’s not like he has been listening to me,” Alyssa said. ‘Guess I’ll have to trouble you to keep an eye on him.”
“Not only that, no one’s taking care of Ms. Lauren…
Alyssa was concerned about the adorable Lauren, who was autistic.
“Mr. Javier is busy with work. Sophia doesn’t care about Ms. Lauren, and Betty goes around bullying the poor girl, leaving Ms. Lauren covered in injuries! Mrs. Rosie almost cried out loud.
She continued. “Even Mr. Jeremy is out working all day. That leaves no one siding with Ms. Lauren at home. I feel bad for that kid, but as a maid, I have no say in her late.”
Alyssa’s eyes were ablaze as she clenched her fists upon hearing the updates.
How unbelievably cruel of you to bully your younger sibling, Betty Walsh!
“Mrs. Rosie, look, I understand, truly. But please remember that I am not Jeremy’s wife anymore. I’m an outsider who has no say in family matters.” Alyssa was helpless despite her feeling indignant.
“I know. But who else can I count on except for you? I can’t talk to anyone about this.” Mrs. Rosie wept.
“Hey, d-don’t cry.” Alyssa felt sorry for the old lady and gently comforted her, “I have taken note of Lauren’s situation. Please take care of her for now. I’ll help her out if I get the chance to do so.”
“Thank you! Thank you, Madam Allison!” Mrs. Rosie expressed immense gratitude and reluctantly ended the call.
Alyssa sighed after the phone screen went dark.
“Is she the old lady at the Walsh’s that you’ve mentioned before?” asked Jonah after taking a sip of tea.
“Yeah. She’s an honest and kind soul who raised Jeremy. She was good to me when I lived at the Walsh’s’.”
She would not hesitate to reciprocate and hit back at those who wronged her. Similarly, she would forever remember the kindness of others.
“It must have been a serious matter if she felt the pressing need to call you.”
“It was Lauren, the youngest of the Walsh’s.”
Her heart pained upon recalling Lauren’s innocent and blank face.
“That child’s autistic. And she’s pretty reserved and introverted. She doesn’t get much attention from her parents and lives her life walking on eggshells.”
Alyssa continued, “I was able to help her out when I was with the Walsh’s. Betty did not go hard on her when I was involved because she’d have to play nice with her sister-in-law. But things went downhill after I left.”
